DoR 2014 / Breaking the Silence

We’ll have the performance of ‘Breaking the Silence’ for 2014 Day of Remembrance (DoR) event. Obento Box (Japanese lunch box) is available for Pre-order.

Breaking the Silence, the oral history play on Japanese Americans, celebrated its 28th anniversary by performing in Hiroshima and it is coming to Salt Lake City. The play, which is presented in Readers’ Theater style, dramatizes the experiences of three generations of Japanese Americans–from immigration at the turn of the 20th century, through incarceration during WW II, to the postwar years of activism and redress.
Nisei writer Nikki Nojima Louis, who as a child was imprisoned in a desert camp in Minidoka, Idaho, wrote the play in 1985 to benefit the civil disobedience case of Gordon Hirabayashi.
Nikki revised the story for us, she has spoken with Internees in Utah to incorporate pieces of their history and Utah history into the play.
